Raw and Honest Blog of a New Single Mom

I am a single mother of a biracial baby boy just trying to make it on my own. This journey is hard, yet rewarding. Blogging is my therapy, these words are my heart, and people doing better and being inspired by what I have written is my passion and hope.

There’s a Watermelon in my Belly

Posted on | February 23, 2009 | 7 Comments

I feel horrible. I can always tell when my baby is growing and my belly is expanding because my insides move and I get this cramping feeling against my stomach and my lower back and well .. my body feels like I’m growing an award-winning sized watermelon inside. It sucks! I don’t even feel like getting out of bed argh.
Also my body is worn out and my sleeping habits have been wack mostly because I have been getting so dehydrated lately. I keep waking up in the middle of the night with a pounding headache, a dry mouth and an urge to guzzle down gallons of water. No matter what I do I can’t seem to stay hydrated. I think I’m just gonna fill and freeze a big gallon of water and let it sit out on my nightstand shortly before I go to bed so when I wake up I have plenty to drink. Hopefully that’ll help me

Anyway, my mom and I went to Babies R Us today to take a look around and see what they had to offer. We pretty much wanted to buy up the whole store for my little boy but amazingly we left empty-handed.

I was really disappointed in the selection of boy stuff they had. They had tons of girl things such as clothes, bedding, swing padding and it was all very pretty but everything for boys was puke green, orange, navy blue and poop brown. Yuck. I love color. Bright, pretty colors and really can’t see throwing my son in such vomit-inducing rubbish LOL. I’ve come across more colorful things for boys online but it’s way more expensive. Oye.

QUESTION: When you start off buying things for your baby do you just buy one size and add on as he grows? (So far I’ve gotten him onesies in 0-3 months size because I doubt hell be 6lbs or less for very long if at all) Or do you stock up on sizes 0-3 mo, 3-6 mo?

    IKEA!!
Ikea has a fantastic selection of unisex baby linens!
I wish I’d found that out before I ended up with Classic Winnie-The-Pooh. It totally didn’t suit his personality.
I found surfboard themed stuff there that suited him SO much better and I wish I could have gotten it!

I bought barely any of the teeny sizes and ended up with mostly 3-6 and 6-9 month sizes because everyone told me that he was going to grow so fast!
It ended up that everything was too big for him because he was so tiny when he was born lol
I ended up buying two preemie sleepers because everything was WAY too big for him (and he wasn’t even premature — he was two weeks late) and even those were too big!
If I was going it again I would just buy a couple of each things until I knew how big he was going to be!

I’m so excited for you!! If you need anything at all let me know!

It seems to me that all stores have way more cute girl stuff! I have a 2 year old boy. Ive found that Target probably has the most cute boy stuff. Do you have a Target where you live?? When I was pregnant I didnt really buy anything over 9 months. But thats really up to you. Some 0-3 month stuff doesnt even fit right away. You may need to get a couple preemie outfits. My son was 8.14 and he wore newborn size for a little bit. Hope I was some help!! And congrats on the boy!! They are a handful, but SO worth it!!!

Nicole, that’s what I’m afraid of .. either hell be a fat baby (I don’t eat a WHOLE lot though) or thin because when I got his last ultrasound he was skeletal but she said that was normal.

I’ve been thinking that he’ll grow like crazy so I’ve gotten him the bigger stuff .. I may go back and get smaller things just in case .. my mom yells at me because I still have about 4 months to go but I can’t help it. I’m so happy to have my boy that I gotta spend money on him LOL

Stephanie, that is so true about the stores! It sucks! I went to Target like you suggested and their selection was much better especially with Easter and Spring coming up. They even had a couple of girl out fits that were passable for boys that I grabbed cause I want something with purple in it lol They prices weren’t too outrageous either.

    Thank you!

The Children’s Place online- love their kids clothing and they have sales throughout the year, $5 shipping regardless of how much you buy. Do a search for codes before buying anything too. A lot of the time I can fine 10% off codes for my orders.

I’d suggest having 5 basic outfits on hand for every size up to 12mos.
